Native American Totem poles are monumental sculptures carved from great trees, typically Western Red cedar, by a number of Indigenous cultures along the Pacific northwest coast of North America. The word "totem" is derived from the Ojibwa word odoodem, "his totem, his kinship group" (root -oode).
Totem pole construction underwent a dramatic decline at the end of the 19th century due to American and Canadian urges towards Euro-American enculturation and assimilation. Freshly-carved totem poles are now being erected up and down the coast.

The native American style totem poles we sell are made by an Indonesian family who descend from First nations people who lived in Canada some 65 - 70 years ago. These people are not Full blooded First nations themselves but simply artists who have been taught by there descendants and now enjoy making statues, ornaments and art in traditional ways to respect the art of their ancestors. A bit like modern day Egyptians creating Papyrus in respect of their forefathers art.
